DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – As fire wildfire activity continues to moderate, the Superior National Forest is re-opening public access to the Trails End Campground at the end of the Gunflint Trail in Cook County on Wednesday.
A partial re-opening of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness for some camping will begin Thursday depending on weather and fire behavior.
Forty one entry points into the eastern and central portions of the BWCA will be open for day and overnight use. The re-opened areas represent about 39 percent of the BWCAW.
Overall combined coverage of the fires that began with lightning strikes on July 6th was just over 64 thousand acres in northern Minnesota and an additional 8 thousand acres in Canada.
The largest of the fires is the Bear Trap fire in the BWCA, about 20 miles north of Ely, which has burned over 37 thousand acres and is now about 38 percent contained. Crews are making progress in the south and southeast perimeters of the that wildfire.
There are about a thousand personnel assigned to work on the various fires that continue to burn.
