DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – A late thaw and heavy spring rains has increased levels on area streams and rivers.
To maintain the safety and integrity of the Island Lake reservoir into the Cloquet River, the outflow has been increased by Minnesota Power.
Because of that higher outflow, a flood warning for the area below the Island Lake reservoir, including Hunter and Bowman Lakes, has been issued until 12:15 p-m on Wednesday.
Some homes in that area are experiencing flooding.
The only time the water level on Island Lake has been higher than now was in 1950. The high flow into the lake peaked on Monday and is expected to recede.
Depending on the amount of more rain this week, the outflow could be prolonged.
High flows are also impacting other areas in the Minnesota Power hydro system including Birch and Garden Lakes.
