DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – The Superior National Forest has temporarily closed public access to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) and urges those already camping in the area to evacuate.
The decision to close came after a surge of wildfires across the area and the hot, dry and windy weather that causes the fires to spread fast and unpredictably.
The closure will remain in effect until fires have been contained and the risk to the public decreases. There are about 1,900 wilderness campsites included in the closure.
Fire danger continues to be very high from Duluth through the Arrowhead to the North Shore and is likely to remain that way through the end of July.
Meanwhile, a “GO Alert” for part of Lake County has been issued. The alert affects those north of Fall and Cedar Lakes just north of Ely and Winton. The fire in that area has jumped its containment line and is growing rapidly.
