DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – The Superior National Forest might partially open the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness for day use on Monday.
That would depend on no new major wildfire activity over the weekend.
Forest officials anticipate opening select portions of entry points in Cook and Lake Counties although other entry points to the BWCA will remain closed.
No overnight camping is currently allowed but could resume after July 29th if there is no new significant wildfire outbreaks.
Since most of the wilderness is still impacted by uncontrolled wildfires, the closed areas will remain until the fires have been contained. About 1,900 wilderness campsites are included in the closure.
