MINNEAPOLIS, MN (KDAL) – New research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety shows that going faster than posted speed limits is becoming more common.
The findings show many drivers don’t expect enforcement unless they are traveling 10 to 12 miles per hour over the posted limits.
The top reasons for speeding are getting around slower drivers, reaching their destination faster and keeping up with the flow of traffic. Nearly half of drivers surveyed believe keeping up with traffic is safer than obeying the speed limit.
AAA says speeding has serious consequences and is a factor in about 30 percent of traffic fatalities according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The faster you’re going, the less time you have to avoid a crash or other dangerous situation.
The study says the threat of a ticket is still the strongest incentive to slow down followed by avoiding a crash and responding to bad weather.
With more vehicles on the road, increased law enforcement can be expected during the Labor Day Weekend in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Despite the growing acceptance of speeding, drivers overwhelmingly support targeted speed enforcement especially in areas with a history of speed related crashes. Seven in ten support automated speed enforcement cameras at those locations and 87 percent support an increased police presence.
