DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – As of Sunday night, there are at least 20 active wildfires in the Superior National Forest with five inside the BWCA.
The fires range in size from 1.6 acres to 700 acres. St. Louis County has implemented the Ready-Set-Go Notification System for the Sioux Fire, a 288 acre fire burning north of the Echo Trail and east of the Jeanette Campground just outside the BWCA.
More than a dozen BWCA entry points near Ely and access to 15 lakes and campsites near the Gunflint Trail are closed.
Residents should remain aware of current evacuation information and monitor county communication channels for situation updates. https://sheriff-slcgis.hub.arcgis.com/pages/wildfire?utm_source=MarketingCloud&utm_medium=email
With hot, dry and windy conditions, critical fire weather is expected continue across the region. Burning restrictions are now in place for Cook, Lake and northern St. Louis Counties. No campfires or burning of brush or yard waste is allowed.
The burning restrictions will remain in place until terminated by the DNR when conditions improve.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has called in the National Guard to help fight the fires.
