Brett Baty’s first-inning grand slam set the pace and the visiting New York Mets held on to beat the Atlanta Braves 8-5 on Monday in the opener of a three-game series.
The Mets ended Atlanta’s nine-game home-field winning streak and improved their record against the Braves to 7-4. New York has won six out of seven on its nine-game road trip.
Francisco Lindor went 3-for-5 and added a home run to help the Mets’ 12-hit attack. Jared Young had two hits and two RBIs. New York reliever Daniel Duarte (1-0) tossed two hitless innings, and Kodai Senga pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his first career save.
Bryce Elder (8-7) worked five innings and allowed seven runs on 10 hits, ending a string of 18 consecutive games in which Atlanta starters allowed three runs or fewer. Mauricio Dubon hit a two-run single.
Twins 9, Orioles 5
Josh Bell went 2-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs, and Minnesota held on for a win over Baltimore in Minneapolis.
Ryan Jeffers finished 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs for the Twins, and Austin Martin finished 4-for-5 with a homer, a double and an RBI. Dean Kremer (2-4) beat his former team, which dealt him to Minnesota before the trade deadline. Kremer limited the Orioles to one run on one hit in seven innings with seven strikeouts.
Coby Mayo went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs to lead the Orioles. Trevor Rogers (7-8) allowed two runs on four hits in four innings.
Blue Jays 2, Red Sox 1
Charles McAdoo, recalled from Triple-A Buffalo before the game, hit a solo home run and Toronto held off visiting Boston.
Andres Gimenez added an RBI single for the Blue Jays, who have won three of their past four games. Simeon Woods Richardson (2-7), also promoted from Triple-A on Monday, allowed four hits and a run in three innings of relief. Toronto starter Jameson Taillon left after four scoreless innings due to right forearm discomfort.
The Red Sox, who had been the hottest team in the majors, have lost three in a row. Sonny Gray (14-3) gave up two runs and six hits in six innings.
Phillies 6, Cardinals 5
Edmundo Sosa had two hits and drove in three runs against his old team as Philadelphia prevailed at St. Louis.
Kyle Schwarber collected two hits and two walks and drove in a run for the Phillies. Andrew Painter (2-8) didn’t allow a hit until the sixth, and he wound up permitting two runs on two hits in 5 1/3 innings. Jonathan Bowlan pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his first career save.
Alec Burleson had two hits and three RBIs for the Cardinals, and Ivan Herrera added two hits and two runs. Hunter Dobbins (2-3) yielded three runs, one earned, in five innings.
Diamondbacks 9, Rockies 0
Nolan Arenado hit a first-inning grand slam and Zack Littell won his Arizona debut in a blanking of Colorado in Phoenix.
Littell (8-8) gave up two hits in 4 2/3 innings after replacing starter Michael Soroka. Arenado added a single and a stolen base and Gabriel Moreno and Ketel Marte had two hits and an RBI apiece for the D-backs, who are eight games above .500 for the first time this season.
Troy Johnston had two hits for the Rockies, who were shut out for the sixth time this year and have lost 10 of 14. Gabriel Hughes (0-4) yielded seven runs on five hits in four innings.
Padres 3, Brewers 2
Jackson Merrill belted a two-run homer in the seventh inning as San Diego rallied for a win over visiting Milwaukee.
Ty France homered, singled and scored twice for the Padres, who won for the fourth time in five games. San Diego reliever Yuki Matsui (3-1) pitched a perfect inning, and Mason Miller worked a scoreless ninth for his 30th save.
Brewers starter Logan Henderson (6-2) pitched a career-high 6 1/3 innings, yielding five hits and three runs. Jackson Chourio had three hits, and Christian Yelich socked a two-run homer.
Rays 10, Athletics 6
Yandy Diaz went 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs, Junior Caminero swatted a three-run blast and Tampa Bay scored eight runs in the eighth inning to rally for a victory over the Athletics at West Sacramento, Calif.
Jonny DeLuca had three hits and scored twice and Jonathan Aranda had two hits in the 12-batter eighth as the Rays recorded their seventh consecutive victory. Chandler Simpson had two hits, two steals and an RBI, and Taylor Walls added a tiebreaking two-run single.
Zack Gelof homered for the Athletics and joined Henry Bolte, Lawrence Butler and Jeff McNeil with two hits apiece. The Athletics’ Jacob Lopez tossed seven solid innings, giving up two runs on five hits, before the bullpen blew a four-run lead.
Astros 6, Giants 3 (10 innings)
Cam Smith tied the game with a two-out, two-strike single in the ninth inning, Isaac Paredes highlighted a three-run 10th with a two-run double and visiting Houston rallied to defeat San Francisco.
Astros starter Hayden Wesneski was charged with all three Giants runs on five hits in seven innings. Josh Hader (4-1), who worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth to force extra innings, set the Giants down in order again in the 10th to pick up the win.
Jung Hoo Lee had two hits for the hosts, who have lost eight of their last 10, including two straight in extra innings. Seeking his first win of the season, Giants starter Blade Tidwell left with a 2-1 lead, having held the Astros to four hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Dodgers 6, Royals 5
Tarik Skubal went five innings in his home debut, Freddie Freeman delivered a go-ahead single in the seventh inning and host Los Angeles rallied for a victory against Kansas City.
Max Muncy had a three-run double while Freeman had three hits for the Dodgers, who had lost eight of their previous nine games. Freeman’s one-out single scored Shohei Ohtani from second. Winless in two starts for the Dodgers, Skubal allowed three runs on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
Jac Caglianone homered and drove in three while Kyle Isbel added a home run for the Royals, who lost for their fourth time in five games. Noah Cameron permitted four runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings after having allowed one earned run over his previous three outings (23 innings).
Rangers 4, Angels 1 (10 innings)
Brandon Nimmo drove in the go-ahead run with a bases-loaded single and Jake Burger added a two-run single in a three-run 10th inning, leading Texas past Los Angeles in Anaheim, Calif.
Elias Diaz went 2-for-5 with an RBI and Nimmo also had two hits for the Rangers, who won for the fifth time in six games. Peyton Gray (6-0) tossed a 1-2-3 ninth, and Jacob Latz pitched a hitless 10th for his 23rd save.
Mike Trout hit a home run for the Angels, who lost their third straight game. Reliever Luke Murphy (0-1) allowed three runs (two earned) in one-third of an inning.
